Tutorial: How To Make a New Folder
Please Note: These instructions are not for entering new data into Firebox. That is done simply by tapping on the Folder, tapping 'Edit', and then '+'.
The Firebox database contains three kinds of things:
- Fields - Fields have names, like "URL", and values, like "www.apple.com"
- Records - a Record contains all the Fields for something you want to keep secret
- Folders - a Folder contains all the Records of the same kind
For example, you might make a "Private Phonebook" Folder, with "First Name", "Last Name" and "Phone Number" Fields.
Firebox is flexible and easy to use, and allows you to store data in the way you desire, instead of what someone else chooses. You can use the example templates provided with Firebox as-is, edit them to your liking, or make new ones yourself.
Let's go through a simple example. We will create a new Folder, but it all applies to editing an existing one.
Pretend you have a collection of expensive watches, and would like to keep information about them in Firebox. What are the pieces of information you might want to store for each watch? We will make Fields for:
- Manufacturer
- Model
- Color
- Year
Folder List
Begin by launching Firebox and unlocking it. You will start on the Folder page. Tap the 'Edit' button, to enter editing mode. Make a new Folder by tapping the '+' button.
New Folder
Folder Name
You will be taken to the Edit Folder page. Tap on the 'Folder Name', and name your Folder. Type in "Watch Collection", then tap 'Done'.
Fields Added
Now define the Fields. Tap the Add Field Button, and give the new Field the name "Manufacturer", then tap 'Done'. Repeat this for "Model", "Color", and "Year".
Now your Folder page has a name ("Watch Collection") at the top, 1 Field ("Manufacturer") in the List View Fields section, and 3 Fields ("Model", "Color", "Year") in the Detail Fields section.
Dragging Field
Folder Complete
The List View section only has "Manufacturer" in it, but we want more info on the overview page. Tap and hold on the list-reordering control on the righthand end and drag the "Model" Field up from the Detail section into the List View section.
Drag Folder
Tap 'Done' to save the Folder. You will be back on the Folder page, with your new Watch Collection Folder listed at the bottom. It's our new favorite, so drag it to the top of the list. Now save the Folders by tapping the 'Done' button.
You have now created a new Folder in Firebox. It's that easy.
Empty List View
With your Watch Collection Folder complete, you can now store as many watches as you like. Tap on the Watch Collection Folder. You will be taken to the list of watches, which is of course, empty.
Add New Watch
Tap 'Edit', and then '+' to add a new Watch. You will be taken to the edit page for a new watch. Enter the data about this watch into the Fields, and then tap 'Save'.
List View
Detail View
You will return to the Watch Collection overview page, tap 'Done'. You will see that your watch is listed, but only the Model and Manufacturer. Tap it to see the rest of the fields.
Repeat for each watch you want to store.
Delete Watch
To delete a watch, tap 'Edit', then the red circle next to its name. You will be asked to confirm, because the data will be lost. This is the same way you delete a Folder, but be warned, all the records in that Folder are deleted too.
Edit Folder
Reordered List View
If you discover later that you want to add additional Fields to your Watch Collection, perhaps "Price", you can return to the Edit page for the Folder and add or remove fields, reorder them, and move them back and forth between the List and Detail view.
