What is Firebox?
Your data...
...your way
Firebox is an iPhone application that provides customizable, easy-to-use, encrypted storage. Although Firebox includes a few common record types (for web logins, serial numbers, etc), you can fully customize any included template or create your own from scratch. Some examples include:
- login/password information for computer accounts and web sites
- serial numbers of cameras, laptops, and other devices in case of theft
- auto registration, insurance, and license information
- credit card information in case your wallet/purse is lost or stolen
- medical insurance and prescription information
- private contact information and phone numbers
- software registration codes and serial numbers
- any other information you need to keep secure and private
Firebox lets you organize and view your information however you wish, and you can rearrange it at any time. Firebox features include:
- strong, best practices encryption (see below for details)
- unlimited number of Folders (categories)
- unlimited customizable Fields per Folder
- unlimited Records in each Folder
- unlimited text in every field!
- complete control over which Fields are displayed in the List View and which Fields are only shown in the Detail View
Firebox automatically re-locks your data when the iPhone is locked, goes to sleep or is shut off.
Data Security Details
Firebox encrypts all of your data using Blowfish, widely recognized as a strong encryption algorithm. Equally important, Firebox uses Blowfish in Cipher Block Chaining (CBC) mode, required by most encryption specifications. It uses 64-bit keys with PBKDF2 key strengthening, to protect against standard attacks.
While other products advertise 256-bit or larger keys, a key is only as good as the password used to create it. 256-bit keys provide the same level of security as 64-bit keys with passwords of 11 characters or less -- which appears to include most real-world passwords.
Whenever Firebox exits -- whether you switch apps, lock your iPhone, or shut it off -- your database is secured. Firebox erases the decrypted version of your data from RAM, and only the encrypted version remains on the iPhone's flash storage.
